66177 at Blea Moor Tunnel south
BLEA MOOR TUNNEL SOUTH - 20th June 2002
Leaving the 2,629 yard Blea Moor Tunnel 66177 enters blazing sunshine. This section of line is on the level and the train has had a shallow climb through the tunnel from Dent Head. Construction commenced in 1870 and took five years in the days of pick and shovel and gunpowder - no tunnel boring machines in those days! - it was an amazing feat of both engineering and bloody hard work! Note the spoil heaps still reside - and probably always will.
